Possibly the most photographed of these is Mosi-o-Tunya, (‘the Smoke that Thunders’) - the Victoria Falls. The mighty Zambezi River tumbles over the Victoria Falls to the south-west of the country, on its way to Lake Kariba.

Interspersed with vast grassy plains, Zambia is well-watered - almost half the water in the Southern African region is to be found here in the form of numerous lakes and rivers.

Capital city:
Lusaka
, the capital city, together with Livingstone at Victoria Falls, are the principal points of entry to the country. Lusaka is the business centre of the country while Livingstone, with its brand-new luxury Sun International properties, is becoming increasingly more popular for visitors to the Falls.

People:
African ethnic groups comprise Bemba, Nyanja, Lozi and Tonga. Smaller groups include Ngoni, Lunda, Kaonde and Luvale. Asians and whites comprise only around 2% of the population.

Languages:
English, plus over 70 indigenous languages.

National Parks:

  • The South Luangwa National Park is famous for its elephant population and the largest number of crocodiles to be found in any river on the African continent.
  • Kafue National Park has a diversity of animals including the greatest variety of antelope of any African reserve. Birding is especially rewarding here with over 400 species recorded, including Chaplin’s barbet, the rare taita falcon and Pel’s fishing owl.

When to Go:
The dry Winter months (May to October) are the best time to visit. As the grass is lower during winter, the game-viewing is optimal during this time.

Health Precautions:
Malaria is rife in parts of Zambia so prophylaxis is essential. Treatment should begin prior to arrival in the country and continued afterwards – please complete the course. Yellow fever inoculation and Tetanus vaccinations are also recommended.
