  • Bakone Malapa Open-Air Museum
This village offers visitors some insight into the background and history of the Bakone people, a sub-group of the Northern Sotho. The village has been reconstructed in the style used by the Northern Sotho approximately 250 years ago. Two lapas (homesteads) contain exhibits that explain much of the Bakone’s history.

  • There are also demonstrations of traditional fire making, maize grinding and beer brewing.
  • Handcraft demonstrations include pottery, wood carving, basketry and bead work and a craft shop sells reasonably priced crafts made mainly by the locals.
  • Tours are conducted at set times throughout the day and most of the guides are excellent story-tellers who can fill you in on all the cultural aspects of this age-old civilisation.
  • Tsonga Kraal Open-Air Museum
  • On the programme at the Tsonga Kraal are demonstrations of how the original inhabitants extracted salt from the region’s many salt pans and of iron ore extraction and smelting. With their links to the Nguni people, who migrated southwards from central and eastern Africa bringing with them much livestock, it is inevitable that there would be goats and chickens wandering around the village.

There are also some fine specimens of Nguni cattle, and the cultural significance of these cattle is explained in the course if the tours. Some excellent performances of traditional dancing may also be seen at the village.
