  • Albany Museum Complex
    The Albany Museum Complex consists of 5 fascinating museums:
    • the Provost Prison;
    • Fort Selwyn guards the entrance to the 1820 Settler’s Monument above the city;
    • the Observatory;
    • the History Museum records the family trees of the British 1820 Settlers, and also offers a genealogical service to the public. Jewellery, clothing, toys, furniture, porcelain cooking utensils and military memorabilia from the settlers are also on display;
    • the Albany (or the Natural Sciences) Museum, the second oldest museum in the country. On display are traditional Xhosa dress and beadwork, depictions of early man, an Egyptian mummy, artefacts and exhibits of animals and birds. The museum specialises in the study of freshwater fish, insects and geology, as well as archaeology.
       
  • 1820 Settlers’ Monument
    The 1820 Settlers’ Monument was built to commemorate the contribution made by English-speaking South Africans in the development of the country. A soaring yellowwood sculpture by South African artist Cecil Skotnes, is the focal point in the Fountain Foyer. Also housed here is an art gallery with temporary exhibits and a restaurant.
