The Albany Museum Complex consists of 5 fascinating museums:
- the Provost Prison;
- Fort Selwyn guards the entrance to the
1820 Settler’s Monument above the city;
- the Observatory;
- the History Museum records the family
trees of the British 1820 Settlers, and also offers a
genealogical service to the public. Jewellery, clothing, toys,
furniture, porcelain cooking utensils and military memorabilia from
the settlers are also on display;
- the Albany (or the Natural Sciences)
Museum, the second oldest museum in the country. On display are
traditional Xhosa dress and beadwork, depictions of early man, an

geology, as well as archaeology.
- 1820 Settlers’ Monument
The 1820 Settlers’ Monument was built to commemorate the
contribution made by English-speaking South Africans in the development
of the country. A soaring yellowwood sculpture by South African artist
Cecil Skotnes, is the focal point in the Fountain Foyer. Also housed
here is an art gallery with temporary exhibits and a restaurant.
