1. Wilderness Area, Garden Route: 2005

  • Highly experienced registered S.A.H.P.A. Instructor who competed in the 1993 World Paragliding Championships in Verbier, Switzerland and has been instructing since April 1992 with an Injury-Free record.

  • 27 Flying sites within an hour’s drive of the Wilderness – most of them within 30 minutes.
  • A detailed site guide of the area is available at a small fee when applying for temporary club membership.
  • Fee for guiding and supervising your flight around the Garden Route is US$ 10 per pilot per day, using your transport. We can provide transport at surcharge, if required.

(b) Introduction Course

  • Enjoy the thrill of paragliding, foot launching of a 6 kg inflatable wing from a suitable slope facing into the wind. This is the cheapest form of aviation and the easiest to learn!

  • Flights subject to prevailing weather conditions. If unable to fly on a particular day due to unforeseen circumstances, training will be provided on the next suitable day. If the student voluntarily withdraws from the course, a refund is not entertained.

(c) Tandem Flight Training

  • On any good weather day, after the theoretical learning experience, enjoy the thrill of a paragliding flight as a passenger! This is an option to a solo instruction day.
  • Soar with the seagulls along the dunes of the Wilderness OR take off from the Map of Africa view site, flying over Dolphin Point and in season, perhaps enjoy some aerial whale spotting!
  • Depending on wind conditions, flights from 03-15 minutes and longer are possible.
  • All you need is some warm clothing and a camera!

(d) Basic License Course

  • In order to paraglide legally without the supervision of an instructor, it is necessary to obtain the S.A.H.P.A. Basic License. The Basic License entitles you to fly at any Basic Graded Site at own discretion. The S.A.H.P.A. is the only controlling body empowered by the Civil Aviation Authority to issue hang gliding and paragliding licenses.

  • Minimum Requirements
    • Valid student license
    • 25 logged flights over a 7-day period under instructor supervision
    • Minimum of 2 hours flight time of which 1 flight must have been longer than 20 minutes and 10 flights have to be higher than 100 meters
    • Obtain more than 85% in the written open book exam
    • License awarded at the discretion of the Instructor

  • On the Basic License Course, more time is spent on improving the starting and flying techniques.
  • A series of lectures covering the topics of aerodynamics, meteorology, air law, safety procedures and flying techniques and skills are covered.
  • Every 3rd Monday evening is a ‘Bring & Braai’ (barbeque) with a guest Speaker to facilitate the on-going learning experience.
  • As paragliding is a weather dependent sport, daily flying will be at a site suitable for the prevailing conditions to ensure our high safety standard is maintained.
  • All aviation equipment provided, including 2-way communication.
  • If you have committed yourself to paragliding, then your own equipment is essential. We will help you to obtain your own canopy to suit your requirements.
  • Video footage is used to review performance.
